Faraday Institute Newsletter No. 103 - August 2014

This annual course was held once again in the beautiful surroundings of Lucy Cavendish College, Cambridge from 6th -11th July.  A total of 48 delegates and sixteen speakers gathered to tackle key issues in the relationship between science and religion. The week was characterised by intense concentration, keen questioning of the speakers and lots of discussion, both formal and informal, plus good food, laughter and the opportunity to explore some of Cambridge’s scientific history. This year for the first time we introduced ‘Meet the Speakers’ sessions where groups of delegates quizzed the speakers on their specialist topic – or anything else that they wanted to ask. This was an opportunity to get beyond the contents of a lecture or hand-out and learn at first hand how our speakers respond to questions of science and faith. Plans are underway for next year’s Course: 5th -10th July 2015 in Cambridge, so if you’ve not been on a Summer Course before, why not put the dates in your diary. Full details and booking forms will be available in the Autumn on the Faraday website.

The Faraday Institute has partnered with the God and the Big Bang project led by Michael Harvey to run a series of communication workshops. These are for early career scientists who are committed Christians and will train them to speak on science and religion issues in a variety of contexts, including the successful school conferences organised by the project ( The first workshop will take place in Cambridge in September 2014. If you know anyone that might benefit from such training, please put them in touch with The Faraday Institute.

The Faraday Institute is partnering with local initiatives to run courses in Argentina and Brazil in October 2014 and in Spain in November 2014. More details and local contact information can be found on our website here:
